 North East India comprises of seven states popularly known as the "Seven Sisters". They are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura respectively. History of North East India
Initially before independence, the whole of North East India was known as Assam, which later on fragmented into seven states based on the local dialect and culture of each state. The North East is a true frontier region. One of the most ethically and linguistically diverse regions in Asia, each state has its distinct cultures and traditions within the same region.
Some groups have migrated over the centuries from places as far as South East Asia. They retain their cultural traditions and values but have begun to adapt the contemporary lifestyles.
The festivals and celebrations in the North- eastern states of India are a colourful reflection of the people and their lives. Throughout the year, different people celebrate festivals with lot of fanfare in different ways, most of them centering around their modes of living and livelihood.
Tourist Places in North East India
Each state - Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Manipur - is a traveller's paradise, with picturesque hills and green meadows which shelters thousand of rare species of flora and fauna. In addition, these seven sisters also provide scope for adventure sports like angling, boating, rafting, trekking and hiking. Besides, there are a number of wild life sanctuaries and national parks where rare animals, birds and plants fascinate nature-loving visitors.
Art in North East India
The art forms specific of each state are the centre of attraction for all the visitors visiting North East India. The artefacts comprise of some of the memorable souvenirs for the travellers.
Arunachal Pradesh - hand made pottery, brass cutting, silver works, articles made with goat hair, ivory, boar's tusks, beads of agate, and other stones as well as brassware and glassware.
Assam - handloom weaving, cane and bamboo work, sitalpith, brass and bell metal work, ivory, wood-work, sholapith, pottery and fiber craft. Handloom weaving comprises the culture of endi, muga and mulberry silk.

Manipur - textiles, strong bell metal bowls, cane and bamboo and mats made of spongy reeds, gold and gold plated jewellery- earrings, necklace, armlets and bracelets, beautiful dolls and toys of straw and clay.
Meghalaya - artistic textile weaving, woodcarving of Garo hills, silk weaving of Endi silk, carpet weaving, ornaments, musical instruments are other specialities, Pineapple fiber articles such as nets, bags and purses.
Nagaland - weaving, basketry, woodwork and jewellery making, shell and bead products, birds' wings and flowers, pot making, earthen pots by hand without using wheel.
Tripura - handloom with vertical and horizontal stripes with scattered embroidery in different colours, cane and bamboo craft, lamp stands, tablemats, brass and bell metal articles, sitalpati, woodcarving, silver ornaments and other crafts.
