 The region consisting the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Daman & Diu, and Goa is in general considered as the western part of India or the West India. One common link that is shared commonly by all the states is the Arabian Sea shore. Western India is one of the most developed regions in India today. History of West India
All the major empires of this region extended their empire much beyond the geographical confines of Western India and became trans-regional powers in themselves. Some of the major empires of this fertile land were Gurjars, Pratihars, Marathas, and many more. In fact, it was the rise of Marathas under the leadership of Shivaji that western India made a mark in Indian history. Marathas, for long remained the headache for not only the Mughals but also the Europeans. During the struggle for Indian independence, western India remained in the forefront and produced able leaders like Dadabhai Naurojee, Gopalkrishna Gokhale, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and most importantly Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

The major tourist states in this region are the 'Pearl of the East' Goa, the land of Marathas Maharashtra, the cultural and literal center Gujarat and the small yet beautiful Indian union territory Daman and Diu. These states have some of the world class beaches, monuments and cusines. The Maharashtrian, Goan and Gujarati cuisines are polpular all over the world. The festivals like Goan carnival, Ganesh Chaturthy and the Navratri are the most famous festival of these three states.
